Wiley Companies Celebrates 40 Years

Let the celebration begin. In June, Wiley Companies turned 40 years old! For richer or poorer; in diet or health?

It is commonly believed that citizens of industrialized countries are better nourished. This belief is partially based on research indicating that people with more education and higher incomes are healthier and make better food choices.

It is well documented and replicated that people who consume more EPA and DHA omega-3 have better overall heart health and are at a significantly lower risk for fatal heart attack. Indeed, people with healthier omega-3 levels also have better brain function, eye health, joint mobility, and greater longevity. We also know that people who are depressed have lower omega-3 levels, compared to those who are not depressed. We have a multitude of reasons to be well-nourished with omega-3 fats.

A 10-Year Evaluation of Oily Fish, Fish Oil, and Health

Around the globe……one in 20 persons under the age of 50 have it; one in 7 between age 50-70 have it, and one in 5 adults over 70 years of age have it. It does not discriminate by gender; it equally effects men and women. It is likely you know someone who has it. I am referring to type 2 diabetes. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are different conditions. About 95% of people who have diabetes have type 2. Diabetes can be managed, but that starts with knowledge of the condition. In the USA, about one-third of people who have the condition or the precursor to it don’t know it. What if we could reduce risk for it? Well, in fact, we can.

Omega-3 and Heart Health: In Perspective

Just over 50 years ago, a Danish medical doctor and his student made a journey to Greenland. The diet of this population was of keen global interest because at that time the death rate from heart disease in the US and Denmark exceeded 35% but was only 5% in Greenland. Could this difference be due to their diet? Confounding the story was that Greenlanders ate a high-fat diet in a time when fat was blamed as the cause of many ailments. In fact, the researchers found that all 3 groups consumed about 40% of their calories from fat, so the difference in these health outcomes could not be explained by fat consumption alone.

Why So Many Forms of Omega-3s?

I’m surprised this question doesn’t come up more often: why so many forms of Omega-3s? There is one form of calcium (calcium), one form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), but several forms of omega-3s. What’s more, the various forms of omega-3s have more differences than commonalities.
